The National Assembly (Hungarian: Országgyűlés) is the parliament of Hungary. The democratic form of the Hungarian parliament was recreated in 1989-1990, after 40 years of socialism. The unicameral body consists of 199 members elected to 4-year terms (between 1990 and 2014, it had 386 members). The Parliament represents the Hungarian nation by the general and secret right to vote. The election is based on a complex system involving both a district and list election. Political parties must win at least 5 percent of the popular vote in order to enter the list of members of the assembly (but area winners enter regardless). The National Assembly has 25 committees to discuss the law drafts which are introduced and to control the ministers.
